Ohyo

 

What is ohyo?

Ohyo is semi-free sparring. It teaches the art of coutering and so teaches to both defend & win, and attack and win.

 

Key:

LLB - left leg back

RLB - right leg back

LLF - left leg forward

RLF - right leg forward

Attack - LLF

Step forward junzuki jodan (right), Gyakuzuki chudan (left), sweep opponent's right foot with ashi-barai using your left leg, finish with gyakuzuki chudan (right).

Defence - RLB

Step back and perform open hand (shuto) uchi-uke with right arm.

Attack - RLF

Slide forwards and perform gyakuzuki jodan (left hand), surikomi ashi-barai (right), gyakuzuki chudan (left).

Defence - RLB

Slide backwards and perform left hand shuto uchi-uke.

Attack - LLF

Step forward junzuki jodan (right), gyakuzuki chudan (left), avoid oncoming punch (duck and slide towards opponent) and place right arm across defender's chest and right shoulder, place left arm behind defender's left knee. Take down over right knee by pushing the defender's torso back with right arm and lifting their leg with left hand. Uraken jodan (right).

Defence - LLB

Step back shuto uchi-uke (left), tetsui (left), lunge forward into junzuki-no-tsukkomi (left).

Attack - RLF

Step forward with left foot whilst performing right hand gyako-uraken jodan, using left hand push defence's right arm away turning them to their left slightly. Punch gyakuzuki chudan (right), reach across their back to their left shoulder using right arm, pull down onto right hizageri, and land with right arm atoshi-empi to their upper back/neck.

Defence - LLB

Skip back and offline covering side of head with right arm.

Attack - LLF

Step forward with right leg and perform left hand gyakuzuki chudan, surikomi-maegeri chudan (right).

Defence - RLB

Step back uchi-uke (right), step back deflecting kick with forearm (sukuiuke) (left), haito chudan (right), uraken jodan (right). Grab attacker's right shoulder/collar with left hand, drop down onto right knee whilst pulling the attacker to the floor with left hand and striking behind their right knee with right hand haito. Strike shuto-uchi jodan.

Attack - LLF

Surikomi-maegeri chudan (left) land gyakuzuki jodan (right), surikomi-ashibarai (dummy) (left), mawashigeri chudan (right).

Defence - RLB

Step back, skip back with open hand uchi-uke jodan (right).

Attack - LLF

Tobikomizuki, tobikomizuki (left, left), skip back perform left hand sukuiuke to deflect the oncoming kick, gyakuzuki chudan (right), take the defender to the ground by grabbing their right shoulder/collar and placing right foot against the back of their right knee. Drop to right knee, gyakuzuki jodan.

Defence - RLB

Skip back open hand uchi-uke (left), skip back open hand uchi-uke (left), maegeri chudan (right).

Attack - RLF

Surikomi ashi-barai (right), ashibarai (left), ushirogeri chudan (right), gyakuzuki chudan (left).

Defence - RLB

Step back, step back, receive the kick and punch.
